The only thing I really like here are the gauges.

And the steering wheel, I really like that steering wheel. For me this is the nicest looking of the X5s

I'm gonna be that one voice in your head that keeps whispering about how you should keep/buy another Citroen.

The first gen X5 still looks absolutely epic to me.
It has more than 10 years old and can still turn heads.

Same, I like it much more than the new steering wheels that BMW is starting to use.

It really is. The X3 on the other hand, the first gen to me was the worse.

Mainly because you can't get them here.

Driven one a short distance - the X5 is a pig. I think the XC90 would be a better choice (based on zero evidence). If I needed a vehicle in this class (and I would have to really need it) probably a Range Rover, a proper one with a split tailgate. Not the Audi, nothing domestic (US). Expedition, Tahoe, no. No idea why.

I'd probably go for the Rangie too. What's wrong with the X5?

It had the bigger engine (4.4?) and just felt awkward - the sight lines were awful. Driven a 1st and 2nd gen RR (US) and felt like it was smaller than it was. The BMW crashed over small road imperfections that a Rangie would have smoothed out. Driving position OK, but if I own a car with a BMW badge on, I want to chuck it into a corner with abandon. This thing just felt huge. Wonder if the Volvo is an improvement ... maybe one day I'll have the need to rent one.
